Top 5 Data Scientists in the world
We humans, atleast once in our life time lose confidence and are depressed. Though we are very much satisfied with the situations we are in, at some point of time we feel dejected because of no reasons. At that specific instant, we might look for someone who will help us to regain our happiness and pull out from depression.
If we have a role model then we might read his/her stories or articles to regain our confidence. Like the same way, people who feels low at work when working as a data scientist can regain his/her confidence and boost themselves by reading about the top Data Scientists in the world.
“Role models set goals for you and try to make you as good as they are. Role models are important—Kasey Zacharias”
There is an enormous difference in calling one as, a Data Scientist and a good Data Scientist but If we are calling a person as a Top Data Scientist in the world then we can imagine ourselves how much they have struggled to gain that name.
In this article, we are going to introduce you the topmost 5 data scientists in the world. We feel these data scientists not only done fantabulous work, they have left a legacy behind the work they have done. So here is a small introduction and tribute to these role models.
1) Alex Paul “Sandy” Pentland:
Alex Paul Sandy Pentland is an American computer scientist born in 1952. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and obtained PhD degree in Psychology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982.
Paul started his career as a lecturer at Stanford University in both Computer Science and psychology and joined MIT faculty in 1986 where he is presently working. Meanwhile he co-founded several companies like IDcubed.org, Cogito health, Ginger.io etc.
Alex Sandy directs the MIT Human Dynamics lab which uses big data understand the human society in a better way. Because of his immense achievements, Forbes named him as the “World’s Most Powerful Data Scientist”. Besides all these, Paul is also working as an advisor in many MNC’s such as Nissan, Motorola, HBR etc.
Yann Lecun was born near Paris, France in 1960 in the month of July. He pursued his diploma in ESIEE in Paris and a PhD in computer science in 1987. While doing his PhD he proposed a back-propagation learning algorithm for neural networks.
When working for AT&T, he developed several new machine learning methods such as convolutional Neural Networks, the Optimal Brain Damage regularization methods etc.
In 2012, Yann Lecun founded NYU Centre for Data Science and stepped down as the Director of NYU- Centre for Data Science in 2014. Later, he joined Facebook as the “First Director of Facebook AI Research” in New York city and currently working in the same.
3) Peter Norvig:
Peter Norvig born in December 14, 1956 is an American Computer Scientist. He received a Bachelor of science degree in field of Applied Mathematics from Brown University and a PhD in Computer Science from the university of California, Berkeley.
Peter started his career as a research scientist. He also worked as a Head of the Computational Science Division at NASA Ames research centre. Before this he worked as a chief scientist at Junglee and as a Senior Scientist at Sun Microsystem Laboratories.
He was honoured with NASA exceptional achievement award, ACM fellow and many more in his career.
Presently Norvig holds the position as a Research Director at Google. His areas of interest include artificial intelligence, machine learning etc.
4) Corinna Cortes:
Corinna Cortes is a Danish Computer Scientist who born in 1961 in Denmark. She received her MS degree in Physics from Copenhagen University in 1989. She received her PhD in the stream of Computer Science from the University of Rochester in 1993.
Corinna joined AT&T Bell labs as a researcher and worked for about 10 years in the same. She is also an Editorial Board member of the journal Machine Learning.
Cortes jointly received the award of “Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award” with Vladimir Vapnik for the development of highly effective algorithm for Supervised learning known as Support Vector Machines(SVM).
Cortes currently serving as the Head of Google Research, New York and she has two children. Her fields of interest are machine learning, data mining.
5) Larry Page:
We think there is no need to give introduction about him if you use Google as it is such a profound name of this generation. Larry page short form of Lawrence Edward Page is the Co-Founder of Google. He was born on March 26th, 1973 in the East Lansing, Michigan, USA.
Larry is an American Computer Scientist and an internet entrepreneur who co-founded Google along with Sergey Brin. He holds the Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from University of Michigan and done Masters in the same field from Stanford University.
Larry Page is the inventor of Page Rank, Google’s best known Search Engine Algorithm. Page rank includes the concepts of machine learning due to which we consider him as a top most data scientist
Larry has stepped down as CEO of Google in the year of 2015 and became the CEO of Alphabet Inc, a subsidiary of Google Inc.
For his overwhelming work, he was honoured with so many awards which comprises World Economic Forum Global Leader for tomorrow, Marconi prize etc.
Out of the 5 data scientists I have introduced, 3 are from Google and 1 is from Facebook. We all know that how much popular the two websites have been. Globally Google is ranked 1 and Facebook is ranked 3. You can imagine the hardwork of these to get their companies to top.
